Bring Zigbee devices together in your smart-home system

A SMLIGHT coordinator from the SLZB-06 family connects compatible Zigbee devices to a system such as Home Assistant through ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. Choose Ethernet to place the coordinator somewhere suitable for your devices away from the server’s location, or use USB for a direct connection.

Place the coordinator where you need it

An Ethernet connection gives you flexibility in choosing the coordinator’s location rather than requiring it to sit beside the computer. With compatible PoE equipment, the same network cable can carry data and power.

Flexible connection options

Use Ethernet to connect through your local network, or USB to connect it directly to the device running the smart-home system. The SLZB-OS interface helps you select the connection mode and configure connection details.

Clearer setup with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT

The device interface shows the coordinator settings needed to connect it to your chosen software, so you can start adding supported Zigbee devices to your system.

What you need to get started

  • When using coordinator mode with Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA, you need an external device running the chosen software, such as a Home Assistant server, and Zigbee devices supported by that software.
  • For network connection: a local network and Ethernet cable, with a suitable USB-C supply for the unit or an active PoE switch/injector compliant with IEEE 802.3af. For direct connection: a USB cable supporting data.
  • Before ordering, check which version is available, SLZB-06 or SLZB-06U, and choose its matching manual and update files; some features differ between the two versions.

Key specifications

Wireless role Coordinator to create a Zigbee network, or Router to join an existing network, depending on configuration and firmware

Usage guidance

Setup tips

Use a power source matching the unit’s manual; an ordinary Ethernet port does not provide PoE. Connect the coordinator to only one program at a time, and protect the management interface with a password within a trusted network. When updating, select files for the actual version and back up your settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is it suitable for my Home Assistant project?

Yes, if you use ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT and Zigbee devices supported by the chosen software. The coordinator handles wireless communication, while the software manages the devices and their functions.

When should I choose Ethernet instead of USB?

Choose Ethernet when you want to place the coordinator somewhere different from the device running the system. USB suits a direct connection to a nearby device. Choose a relatively open location away from interference sources to improve connection conditions.

Do I need a computer running continuously?

In the coordinator arrangement with ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT described here, the device running the software needs to stay on so that device management and its dependent functions continue. It can be a dedicated home server, not necessarily your personal computer.

What is the difference between coordinator and Router modes?

The coordinator creates a Zigbee network and manages its connection to the software. Router instead joins an existing Zigbee network wirelessly and helps forward its messages within coverage; connecting it with an Ethernet cable does not transport the Zigbee wireless network to a location separate from it.

Does it support all Zigbee devices?

Support depends on the device and the ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT software and its version. Before buying, check the software’s compatibility list for the devices you want to add.
